Well, here I am! After 3 months off of running to heal the shin splints on the advice of my podiatrist and a few hundred dollars on specially made orthotics, I went for my first run last night. I decided to start on Week 2, Day 1 rather than Week 1. There wasn't much difference between the two weeks, and so I don't feel like I'll be pushing myself too hard too soon, which is the big lesson I've learnt out of all of this.
Seems I should have worn the orthotics around a bit more before running in them though, oops, as the deep fatigue like pain in the arch of my foot and my ankle was breathtaking! It got a bit better throughout the run (still more like a slow jog, but you have to start somewhere right?!) and by the time I was walking home to cool down, it was there but not the only thing I could think about.
I've also implemented a much better warm up routine than I'd been doing before, particularly on the pesky calf muscles that let me down last time. It seems the 5 sec stretch I was doing before wasn't quite adequate!
I also took my teenage brother with me for the run, which was a bad idea for the old self esteem! The kid whooped my ass! He ran with me for all but the last run when we agreed to run as fast as we felt comfortable rather than the much more comfortable jog we'd been maintaining up till that point. Well, that was the last I saw of him, damn kids and their natural fitness!
And that's it for me now, but I'll be back regularly to keep a record of my journey towards a marathon. Oh yes, the dream is still very much alive, have no fear! Let's hope this attempt lasts better and longer than the last one!
Take care!
